Calling all experienced moms!

OK~ this is a call out for advice, information, tidbits, etc. My Brady won't eat his fruits and vegetables. I will always offer them first and he will bat them off his tray! He wants cheese and meat. He's a stinker.  I will give him a bite of cheerios with a tiny piece of banana on it and as SOON as it goes in his mouth, he maneuvers the banana out of his mouth and somehow keeps the cheerios in! I've tried, carrots, green beans, bananas, plums, apple bits (which on occasion he will eat), applesauce, peaches and pears. All in bite size pieces. He will NOT eat baby food anymore and so I am scrambling because all he wants is milk, cereal, cheese, turkey, cheese crisps, noodles. So basically fats, protein, and carbs. IT would be nice if that was all I had to eat and was struggling to put on weight. What the heck, right? Anyway, I need some fresh ideas. ANYTHING. I know you have em! So give them to me! Hit me with your best shot. I mean, I know that it's good that he is eating the fats and proteins, but I don't think he is getting enough of the food that balances the system. You know, brain development stuff~? Like I say, tell me everything you know! Thanks~ Em

Do you remember when I tried to start Scott on solids? HE WOULDN'T EAT ANYTHING!!! My pediatrician told me to call the Jordan School District to have one of the Occupational Therapists come and work with him. She came one time and basically, what she told me to do was keep giving him the things he doesn't like and one day he'll decide to eat it (I'm still trying that with Ty). Make it colorful--give him peas, corn carrots all at the same time so he can pick and choose what he wants. Also, she said let him play with it. Even, if he's not hungry sit him in his high chair and let him make a mess (you don't want to create any bad habits so maybe just try this once in awhile. Maybe, it's texture thing and if he plays with it, it will end up in his mouth and he'll like it. I hope that helps. You're such a good mommy and you've worked hard to keep Brady healthy--bless your heart!!! Brady appreciates it, even if he can't tell you yet!!! Love you and keep plugging along!

Two things I have done with my kids and persistence is key.

1. It's horrible I know, but when I introduced new things (one food at a time worked best for us) I would say, "Remember last time you tried this and you loved it?!?" The most often response was, "I did?!?" And they seemed to at least have the consideration to "try it again." More than half the time

2. I would tell them to just "try it". I told them if they didn't like it, they could spit it out. There's something about giving them the control of whether or not to swallow that helps them at least to try it. Half the time, they were pleasantly surprised (and finished it!). And new food seemed more of a positive experience than a negative one.

I had to hand feed Annabelle up until she was 5 1/2, she was so picky. Now she eats (and loves) curry, fish, asparagus and brussel sprouts. It'll come, I promise!

I’ve been trying some of the recipes of the book “Deceptively Delicious” the one that you can hide puréed veggies on foods like puréed cauliflower or squash and mix it in macaroni and cheese, etc etc… but I still give her the veggies whole so she knows she has to eat her veggies too (even though she might not eat them half of the time, I keep trying until one day she will) I hope that helps.
I’m so happy you have your blog now; I love to see the pictures and show it to Bella so she can see her cousins, uncle and aunt.

Okay, now with kids...the oldest being 9...I've come to realize that the majority of kids don't like vegetables (except maybe those kids staples like green beans, corn & cold carrots). It comes later when they realize like us that we just need to eat them & they are good! with my kids they like to dip. They'll eat those carrots & broccoli if they can dip in ranch. Also, bribery. :) "Eat your salad or no dessert!" Works every time. As they get older you can talk them into it. When they are so young, like 3 and under you just try and keep trying. It does get easier!! Fun times. Love you guys!

I second the dipping idea...

Also, Garrett did not like fruit at all (now he loves it) I would get those single serve pudding packets and would kind of mash up his peaches, pears, bananas and everything else into the pudding once it was set up. That way he couldn't "pick out" the pieces and he was getting the fruit. Slowly I just cut up the peices and made them a little bigger. I agree that they need to learn in the end to eat the veggies and fruit without it being masked, but that is a whole other ball game and comes later in my opinion.

Also, sometimes with veggies I would smother them with peanut butter! It worked sometimes!!

Good luck!

You guys are ALL amazing moms. I am taking what you have said and running with it. I have tried the dip with Zach and I know it works. I will definitely try to "mashing and hiding" technique. And I will also execute patience and try to have faith that ONE day he will eat them! Loves to you all. I am so grateful to have such good mommies to turn to for advice~ Em

OK, so I am not a mom yet, and I will have quite a few months before we have the vegetable battle, but I remember when I was little my mom would put my lunch in a mini muffin tray. She would put like one slice of carrot, or cucumber, or whatever in each little cup, and then I would eat what I wanted. It was fun to have so many different options, but only a tiny bite of each one. I recently tried this with my super picky/light eater niece. She ate everything in there, twice. Another thing my mom did was what we called "face plates" I don't know if he is old enough yet to play this, but I am going to tell you anyway. She would put like 15 little bowls on the table, each with different little foods. Pretzels, veggies, raisins, apple slices, etc. Then we would use the food to make faces on our plates. I got to pick what was on it, (from her pre-approved selections)and then I got to eat my art creation when I was done. I loved it when I was little. Good luck!

Geez, we'll all there! After Sam wakes up from her nap at 5pm, she wants to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. She is usually hungry, so I put a bowl of green beans next to her. She will actually eat them, because she is so hungry and so distracted by the TV. Any other time, and she refuses. They have to be hungry and they have to have no other options. Good luck!

Hey Emily! Sorry I'm a little bit late on this one... We give our kids Juice Plus Gummies... I don't know if Brady is old enough for them... they're like eating fruit snacks.. well they're derived from whole foods not man-made vitamins, so your body is able to absorb the vitamins better. They have fruit ones and vegetable ones and our kids LOVE them! Sam ate the whole jar once! Which, unlike other vitamins, can't be overdosed on!
I am in no way saying that he doesn't need to eat his fruits and veggies, just that if you're worried about him getting the nutrients... then you might want to look into the juice plus gummies:) Good luck! Hope to see you at the Family Reunion!! (do you know any details about it?? I'm dying to find out... because we're preggers and due in June... I was hoping the Family Reunion might be in July)

Obviously my baby is younger than yours but we have always followed the book super baby foods. It teaches you to make your own baby food but it has a lot of fun recipes for toddlers and adds tons of healthy things. It might be worth a try :)
